What You Need to Know Before Traveling to Belize for the First Time

Updated: Dec 3, 2019

Boasting some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities on the planet, it is no wonder that dive enthusiasts flock to the tropical paradise of Belize. The unique mix of the vibrant Central American culture balanced with a relaxed Caribbean vibe makes Belize a truly memorable vacation destination for your next dive trip. Here are three things that you need to know before traveling to this oasis for the first time.

What to Pack

Because of its subtropical climate, Belize features a distinct dry season and rainy season. The rainy season runs June through October. The average temperature during the dry season hovers between 73 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit while the average temperature during the wet season is 79 to 86 degrees. Be sure to pack layers and a light jacket for rain. Belize is a casual country and your wardrobe should reflect this laid-back vibe. If you do not want to lug your snorkel and scuba gear, it is plenty to easy to find what you need for rent once you arrive.

Keeping Safe

Belize is quite safe, making it a good choice for your next underwater adventure. Despite its reputation for being a safe country, travel insurance can be useful for a “just-in-case” scenario. You can never be too prepared when traveling to a foreign land, so it is best to protect yourself financially. This is especially important if you are traveling during hurricane season when the weather might hamper your travel plans.

Understanding the Basics

Despite being bordered by Mexico and Guatemala, English is the official language of Belize. This surprises visitors that are expecting everything to be in Spanish. However, the country retains its heritage of being once under British rule. While Spanish and Belizean Creole is widely spoken, it is extremely easy to get by with just English. The Belize dollar is attached to the US dollar at a rate of just over $2 to $1, making it easy to convert the currency. As with many Latin American countries, cash is your best bet because not every establishment will accept credit cards.

You will have a much more enjoyable scuba adventure if you equip yourself with the ins and outs of traveling to this country. By knowing all of the essential travel details, you will be able to enjoy your epic scuba trip to the fullest extent.
