How First-Time Divers Can Have a Safe Experience

Updated: Dec 3, 2019

Scuba-diving for the first time can be both an exciting and daunting experience. For most people, it can be a dream come true to have the chance to dive into the ocean. But like anything you do in life, safety must come first. If you're planning to take a course or officially dive for the first time, pay attention to the safety tips listed below.

An Experienced Guide

Having the right person to lead you through your first dive is incredibly important. Make sure that you not only ask them a few questions regarding their past dives but also confirm their credentials. Having the right person alongside you when things go south can literally mean the difference between life or death. Thus, these safety criteria must be the first things you check out before you even get on a boat.

Have the Proper Gear

First-time divers may not truly understand everything that goes into diving into the ocean. Many believe that all you need is a tank and some flippers to do the job. However, any experienced diver will tell you that it takes much more than that to keep you safe. Although it is important to adhere to everything your instructor says, do not rely on them solely to check your equipment. It is best to do some research and learn about the various part of your gear. According to Dolman Law Group, improperly maintained diving equipment can create dangerous conditions that lead to injuries. This will allow you to point out any issues to your instructor if they happen to miss it before or during your dive.

Underwater Vision

One of the first things new divers will notice while diving for the first time underwater is just how limited their line of sight is. Issues such as a lack of sunlight reaching the water or the bulkiness of your goggles can really distort or limit your vision. You will notice that your peripheral vision is the first thing to go. The best way to get used to this is first to practice wearing your goggles and moving your head around on land. According to All About Vision, it’s also important to make sure that you have a prescription mask or mask insert to help you see if you are someone who wears glasses or contacts normally.

Scuba diving is one of the most exciting things one can do. Exploring the seas and seeing all the wildlife is truly a wonderful experience. However, with anything as risky as diving, a few safety precautions must be taken. It is recommended that new divers adhere to the list above to begin preparing for their first dive.
