PADI Specialty Courses are how certified divers go from capable to exceptional. Each course focuses on one specific skill, builds it through structured eLearning and in-water training, and ends with a globally recognized PADI certification that reflects exactly what you have learned.
At Scuba School and Family Dive Center Belize, we offer 11 PADI Specialty Courses, all available with eLearning (fee not included) so you complete the knowledge development at home before your trip. Your in-water training happens here in San Pedro, directly on the Belize Barrier Reef, one of the most diverse and accessible reef systems in the world.
Divers who hold their Open Water or Advanced Open Water certification with us receive 10% off all PADI Specialty Courses, plus free Nitrox certification.
What Are PADI Specialty Courses?
PADI Specialty Courses are focused continuing education programs offered by PADI, the world’s largest scuba training organization. Unlike the Open Water or Advanced Open Water courses, which cover a broad range of foundational skills, each PADI Specialty Course goes deep into one specific area of diving.
There are dozens of PADI Specialty Courses available worldwide. At Scuba School Belize, we offer the 11 most relevant and rewarding specialties for divers training on the Caribbean reef. Each one starts with PADI eLearning you complete at home and finishes with 1-2 days of in-water training in San Pedro.
Completing PADI Specialty Courses also builds toward the PADI Master Scuba Diver rating, the highest non-professional certification in recreational diving, which requires 5 specialty certifications.
PADI Specialty Courses Offered at Scuba School Belize
AWARE: Fish Identification
Learn to identify the species you encounter on every dive. This PADI Specialty Course teaches you to recognize reef fish families, use identification slates, and record marine life observations. Every dive becomes more meaningful when you know exactly what is swimming alongside you.
Boat Diver
Most of the best dive sites in the world are reached by boat. This PADI Specialty Course covers safe boat diving procedures, entries and exits, equipment handling on a vessel, and how to navigate back to the boat after a dive. A practical certification that makes every boat dive smoother.
Digital Underwater Photography
Belize’s reef is one of the most photogenic environments in recreational diving. This PADI Specialty Course teaches composition, lighting, working with a camera underwater without disturbing marine life, and getting sharp images in low visibility. You leave with real skills and images worth keeping.
Drift Diver
Drift diving in Belize means riding warm Caribbean currents while the reef moves past you. This PADI Specialty Course covers buoyancy control in a current, surface signaling equipment, buddy communication, and navigation in moving water. Divers who try drift diving rarely want to stop.
Deep Diver
This PADI Specialty Course extends your depth limit to 130 feet (40 meters), opening up wall dives, ledges, and structures that standard Open Water divers cannot reach. Training covers deep dive planning, air management at depth, buoyancy in deeper environments, and awareness of depth-related effects. Prerequisites: PADI Advanced Open Water certification, minimum age 15.
Enriched Air Diver (Nitrox)
The most popular PADI Specialty Course in the world, and free when you certify with us. Because enriched air contains less nitrogen than standard air, your no-decompression limits extend significantly, and your surface intervals between dives shorten. As a result, you spend more time underwater and less time waiting on the boat. More time underwater, more often. Prerequisites: PADI Open Water certification, minimum age 12.
Night Diver
The Belize reef transforms after dark. Lobsters emerge from hiding, octopuses hunt across the sand, and coral polyps open to feed. This PADI Specialty Course teaches safe low-visibility diving using a dive light, night navigation, and dive planning specific to after-dark conditions. One of the most memorable PADI Specialty Courses available anywhere.
Peak Performance Buoyancy
Buoyancy control separates good divers from great ones. This PADI Specialty Course takes the foundational skills from your Open Water training and elevates them: effortless hovering, reduced air consumption, better trim, and zero contact with the reef. Divers consistently say this course changed the way they dive.
Search and Recovery Diver
Learn systematic underwater search patterns and the techniques to safely bring objects back to the surface. This PADI Specialty Course builds navigation, problem-solving, and teamwork skills that carry over into every dive you do after it.
Underwater Naturalist
Understand the ecosystems you dive through. This PADI Specialty Course covers marine biology, reef ecology, organism behavior, and the environmental impact of diving. It makes you a more responsible and more observant diver on every future dive.
Underwater Navigation
One of the most practical PADI Specialty Courses available. You learn to use a compass, read underwater terrain, estimate distance, and return to any entry point without surfacing to look around. Divers who complete this course feel significantly more confident on unfamiliar sites.
How PADI Specialty Courses Work at Scuba School Belize
All PADI Specialty Courses at Scuba School Belize follow the same structure:
- Sign up for your PADI Specialty eLearning and complete the knowledge development at home before your trip (cost not included)
- Arrive in San Pedro ready for in-water training, no classroom sessions needed on-site
- Complete your specialty dives directly on the Belize Barrier Reef with a PADI-certified instructor
- Receive your PADI Specialty Diver certification card, valid for life and recognized worldwide
Most PADI Specialty Courses take 1-2 days to complete on-site. The Deep Diver specialty may take up to 3 days. Contact us before booking to confirm the timing for the specific course you want.
Adventure Dives Already Count Toward Specialty Credit
If you completed the PADI Advanced Open Water course, the adventure dives you already logged may credit toward the corresponding PADI Specialty Course certification. Deep Diver, Night Diver, Navigation, Peak Performance Buoyancy, and several others all have specialty equivalents where the first adventure dive applies.
Ask us when booking, and we will confirm exactly which specialty credits you already hold. In many cases, you are closer to a specialty certification than you realize.
Why Take PADI Specialty Courses in Belize

We are a PADI 5-Star Resort Facility and hold TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence Hall of Fame designation, earned through 8 consecutive years of 5-star reviews.
