Not ready to commit to a full Open Water certification? The PADI Scuba Diver eLearning course is the perfect first step. It is the fastest way to earn a real, internationally recognized PADI certification, and you can complete it in just 1-2 days in Belize.
The PADI Scuba Diver certification is half of the PADI Open Water Diver course. You get a genuine PADI certification card, real ocean dives, and the skills to explore the underwater world, with a clear path to upgrade to full Open Water status whenever you are ready.
How the Course Works
This is the complete PADI Scuba Diver Certification. All classroom instruction is completed online through PADI eLearning, which you start at home before your trip to Belize. Please note the PADI eLearning fee is a separate cost that goes directly to PADI for their online learning materials.
The course has 3 components:
1. PADI eLearning (Online, Before You Arrive)
Log in from your computer, tablet, or phone and work through the knowledge development modules at your own pace. Topics include:
- How pressure affects your body underwater
- Breathing and buoyancy fundamentals
- Dive equipment setup and function
- Underwater communication and hand signals
- Basic dive planning and safety procedures
2. Confined Water Training
At Scuba School and Family Dive Center Belize, we skip the pool entirely. You practice your foundational skills in shallow, calm open water from the start, giving you a real feel for the ocean before your certification dives. Your PADI instructor walks you through mask clearing, buoyancy control, regulator recovery, and emergency ascent skills.
3. 2 Ocean Checkout Dives
Your 2 certification dives take place along the Belize Barrier Reef, a 5-minute boat ride from our beachfront location in San Pedro. These dives confirm your skills in a real-world environment with your instructor right beside you the entire time.
Included: Equipment Rental, PADI Certification Card, 2 Boat Dives.
Limitations: The PADI Scuba Diver certification allows you to dive to a maximum depth of 40 feet (12 meters) under the direct supervision of a PADI dive professional at all times.
Who Is This Course For?
The PADI Scuba Diver course is a great fit if you:
- Are short on time and want a real certification in 1-2 days
- Want to try scuba with more structure than a Discover Scuba Diving experience
- Are curious about diving but not yet sure you want the full Open Water certification
- Plan to upgrade to PADI Open Water Diver on a future trip

Upgrade to Open Water Any Time
One of the biggest advantages of the PADI Scuba Diver course is that it counts directly toward your full PADI Open Water Diver certification. When you are ready to upgrade, you simply complete the remaining training you have not yet done. Nothing is repeated and nothing is wasted.
Once you hold your full Open Water certification, you can dive independently with a buddy to 60 feet (18 meters) anywhere in the world. From there, the path continues with Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, and beyond. See the full progression in our PADI certification levels guide.
