PADI Open Water eLearning Course

$413 plus $200ish PADI eLearning fee, which is paid directly to PADI

The PADI Open Water eLearning Course is the world’s most popular way to start your scuba diving education. You complete all the classroom work online, at home, on your own schedule, and then arrive in Belize ready to dive.

No sitting through lectures on vacation. No wasted days in a classroom. Just you, the reef, and an instructor in the water.

At Scuba School and Family Dive Center Belize, the PADI Open Water eLearning Course is your gateway to a lifetime PADI certification, earned along the second-largest barrier reef system in the world. No prior experience required.

What Is The PADI Open Water eLearning Course?

The PADI Open Water eLearning Course is the knowledge development portion of the full PADI Open Water Diver certification, delivered entirely online through PADI’s official eLearning platform. Instead of attending classroom sessions at a dive center, you complete all theory before your trip using interactive lessons, videos, and quizzes on any device. Please note the PADI eLearning fee is a separate cost that goes directly to PADI for their online learning materials.

Once the eLearning is done, you complete your confined water training and 4 certification dives here in San Pedro, Belize. The in-water portion takes a minimum of 1.5 days.

The total eLearning portion takes approximately 4-6 hours to complete. You can spread it across several evenings before your trip or knock it out in a focused weekend.

What You Learn in the PADI Open Water eLearning Course

The eLearning modules cover everything you need to know before entering the water:

  • The physics and physiology of diving and how pressure affects your body
  • How to set up, use, and maintain your scuba equipment
  • Dive planning, depth limits, and no-decompression tables
  • Underwater communication, hand signals, and buddy procedures
  • Emergency procedures, controlled ascents, and rescue fundamentals
  • Air supply management and buoyancy principles

Each module includes quizzes to reinforce what you have learned. You can revisit any section at any time, including after your trip as a refresher.

The In-Water Training: What Happens After the eLearning

Completing the PADI Open Water eLearning Course unlocks your in-water training. At Scuba School and Family Dive Center Belize, we skip the pool entirely. Every session, from your first confined water practice to your final certification dive, happens in the warm, calm waters of the Caribbean Sea.

Confined Water Session

Your PADI instructor walks you through the core skills in shallow, controlled water before your certification dives. Skills covered include:

  • Mask clearing, removal, and replacement
  • Regulator recovery and alternate air source breathing
  • Buoyancy control and neutral hovering
  • Controlled emergency swimming ascents
  • Equipment assembly, donning, and adjustment

4 Open Water Certification Dives

Your 4 checkout dives take place directly on the Belize Barrier Reef, a 5-minute boat ride from our beachfront dock in San Pedro. These dives confirm your skills in real ocean conditions. By the time you complete dive 4, you hold a full PADI Open Water Diver certification valid for life, recognized at dive operators worldwide.

Included: Equipment rental, PADI Certification Card for life, 4 boat dives, and free gear rental for every future dive with us.

What Your Certification Allows

After completing the PADI Open Water eLearning Course and your in-water training, your certification qualifies you to:

  • Dive independently with a buddy to 60 feet (18 meters) at any dive site in the world
  • Rent equipment and join guided dives at any operator globally

PADI is the world’s largest scuba training organization, with more than 29 million certifications issued since 1966. The PADI Open Water eLearning Course is the same curriculum taught at dive centers in every major destination worldwide. The difference is where you complete the water portion.
